Why Deep Conditioning is Important in the Winter

Why Deep Conditioning is Important in the Winter

Certain hair types such as those that are curly or kinky always require deep conditioning to look their best. But during the winter time months, deep conditioning is essential to keep all hair types at their healthiest. The conditions of winter worsen frizz, breakage, tangling, and split ends. Why is that? It’s the air. Winter time is usually very dry as far as the air around us goes. That cold, dry air that we encounter outside sucks all the moisture out of your hair very quickly. It also causes tangling.

When you go inside, the air is still dry but now it’s hot because the heater is running. It’s almost like sitting under a hair dryer for the entire time you’re inside. Now you may think that using a hat or a scarf is the way to go to avoid this. This is simply not the case. Hats and scarves and other items made up of materials such as these insulate, keeping the heat in. They also pull and snag your hair, causing breakage and tangles all over the place.

One of the best ways to protect your hair during the winter months is through deep conditioning. The moisture and nutrients your hair needs during the winter are provided in deep conditioners that penetrate every strand of your hair, and you can seriously not do it too much if you are doing it right and using the proper products. You may find that the deep conditioner you usually use just doesn’t cut it during the coldest months. You may need to switch things up. Using deep conditioners that are thicker and creamier with all natural ingredients such as avocado oil is the best way to go. Try to find deep conditioners with oils that are liquid at room temperature, otherwise your hair may just be frozen in coconut oil or something similar, and that is not very helpful.

If you can’t increase the frequency of your deep conditioning sessions, do your best not to skip any that you already incorporate into your schedule. The more you use the deep conditioning products, the more protected your hair will be. Skipping sessions can be costly to your look and style. Try to deep condition your hair at least once per week. You should be able to tell when your hair is getting dry, brittle, or more damaged by arid conditions. Pay attention to what your hair looks and feels like and if you need to increase sessions to twice a week, do that.

With a proper deep conditioning schedule and use of the right products, your hair can look and be healthy and shiny throughout the cold time of the year. If you are unsure about a schedule that’s right for you, ask your local hair care professional to help guide you. We can help assist you in finding a routine and product that works for you and your hair, keeping your hair healthy year round.
